Tips for Shopping Small This Holiday Season

Mark your calendars, mamas! Nov. 30 is Small Business Saturday this year, and I’m here to give you all the tips for shopping small.

Small Business Saturday was created in 2010 by American Express with the goal of encouraging the support of both local and small e-commerce shops. Unlike the craziness that is Black Friday, Small Business Saturday has a much more relaxed vibe and businesses aren’t encouraging their customers to come stand in line outside their door at 3 a.m.

shoppingSmall Business Saturday is the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate our favorite local and small businesses! Here are some tips for when you’re ready to shop.

Pay cash when possible. Many small business owners now accept credit cards with the creation of apps like Square, but for every credit card swipe, there is a fee. Try to remember to bring cash with you when you can. In the long run, any purchase is appreciated, so don’t feel like you can’t use a credit card if it’s all you have.

It’s not just for retail stores! Shopping at local boutiques and small retailers is awesome, but don’t forget about other local gems. Many small businesses are in locations surrounded by local coffee shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Plan your day of shopping to include dining out at your favorite local eatery or sip on freshly-brewed coffee served up by your local barista as you stroll through the shops.

Support and share their posts on social media. Okay, this one is FREE, so there’s no reason not to do it! Spread the word about your favorite small businesses. Likes, follows, and comments on their social media accounts all help get the word out about them. Many shops have sales or promotions for the day, so make sure to let your friends and followers know they don’t want to miss it!

SHOP ALL YEAR! The most important tip is to shop at these businesses year-round. Supporting our local and small businesses helps support our economy. The more we shop with them, the more likely they will thrive. And who doesn’t love the idea of an actual person doing a happy dance with every purchase you make?

I love buying unique and special gifts for friends and family. I love meeting the owners of these businesses who have poured their hearts into their passion. Most of all, I love living in a city with so many small businesses to celebrate! I can’t wait to support some of our wonderful little gems in the Gem City this holiday season. Where will you be shopping small?

Hi! I’m Katie, boy mama to 3, wife of a picky eater, photographer, business owner, and food lover. My husband and I both grew up in the Dayton area but moved away for college. We quickly found ourselves back in Dayton after having our first baby. I never really thought I’d end up back in Dayton but we soon realized how much we wanted to be close to our families after starting our own! I love exploring local restaurants and shops all around Dayton and you’ll probably see me snapping photos to share on Instagram @eatprettydarling!
