A Quick Guide to Painting Your Nails Like a Pro

I often get asked where I got my nails done. And answering “I do them” is still fun to say. When asked how I get my nails to look so nice, I normally sum it up quickly, “I buy pricey nail polish and always use a top coat.” There are a few more steps to it, so I’ll break it down for you here so you can head into the warmer months with people asking where you get your nails done.

I really do buy more expensive nail polish.

I used to stand by Sally Hansen but the girl didn’t have the variety I wanted. I really like glitter and sparkles and to get the desired finish, I needed to start paying a little more for my polish. ILNP (I Love Nail Polish) and Holo Taco are my go-to brands for all things creme (traditional color) and holographic and glitter. The polish ranges from $10-14 a bottle and then there’s shipping on top of it.

Give each coat time to set.

I normally do at least two coats of nail polish to get the coverage I want. Before applying the second coat (!!!!), give your first coat of polish around 10-20 minutes to dry. The more time the better, but sometimes my kids don’t allow for all the dry time my nails need.

ALWAYS use a glossy top coat.

Using a top coat will seal all your work in and make it last longer. My favorite is a quick dry top coat and Essie makes a pretty good one. Once I’m finished with my desired coats of nail polish, I always end with a top coat.

Use a clean-up brush.

I’m not the most accurate when I paint my nails. I get it on my skin basically every time. Buy a clean-up brush – either in a nail art pack or an individual brush (or use a paintbrush). You’ll then need to dip it in some acetone (my favorite nail polish remover) and carefully remove the excess paint.

I do not enjoy getting my nails painted professionally. The times I’ve gone with friends have always been disappointing because I know I could do a better job at home! It’s not relaxing. What is more relaxing is painting my nails, slapping a glitter coat on top and then a glossy top coat, and staring at them once they’re done.

Whether you’re a glitter girl or just looking for a clean polish job at home, these tips will get you started.
