March is National Craft Month!

March is finally here and we can’t help but be excited because it means signs of Spring will come to thaw us out. It also happens to be the time to celebrate some pretty exciting stuff, like National Craft Month!

It was started in 1994 by the Craft & Hobby Association to help people rediscover the benefits of crafting – because we were too busy wearing green and watching a basketball tournament in March that we forgot! Crafting covers a range of activities from sewing, to knitting, to coloring, to jewelry making. It’s a great way for kids to express their creativity, build fine motor skills and dexterity, learn to make decisions, and most importantly it’s a great way for the whole family to create together. Raise your paintbrush if you’re ready to celebrate!

Here are some simple craft ideas that you and your family can make together at home with just a few things you may already have on hand. When your masterpieces are complete, make sure to wear, display, and play with them!

Craft #1: Spiral Plate

SUPPLIES: Paper Plates (the cheap ones work best), Paint, Paintbrushes, Scissors

DIRECTIONS:

Paint one side of the paper plate. Let it dry completely before turning it over and painting the other side. Once the whole plate is dry, cut the plate in a spiral pattern. Pull up the center and watch it spiral down!

Craft #2: Popsicle People

SUPPLIES: Popsicle sticks, Markers, Glue, Clothing and hair options – Cupcake liners, Tissue Paper, Pompoms, Stickers

DIRECTIONS: Draw a face on one end of the popsicle stick. Add clothing, hair, or even make a superhero!

Craft #3: Paper Straw Necklace

SUPPLIES: Paper Straws, String, Scissors

DIRECTIONS: Cut straws into smaller segments ranging from ½ inch to 2 inches, no need to be exact. Cut string into necklace length pieces ( 16-18 inches or large enough to go over the head ) String straw pieces onto the string and tie the two loose ends together in a knot when the string has an inch left on each end. Now you can wear your art!

Katie
Hi! I’m Katie, boy mama to 3, wife of a picky eater, photographer, business owner, and food lover. My husband and I both grew up in the Dayton area but moved away for college. We quickly found ourselves back in Dayton after having our first baby. I never really thought I’d end up back in Dayton but we soon realized how much we wanted to be close to our families after starting our own! I love exploring local restaurants and shops all around Dayton and you’ll probably see me snapping photos to share on Instagram @eatprettydarling!
