April Dayton Dozen

April is approaching and it’s one of my favorite months. The trees start blooming, baby animals appear everywhere, and the sun shines just a little bit longer each day. The best part is that fun events are springing up around us too! 


1. The Great Ohio Toy Show– Wilmington

***DMB Tip – Enjoy local gems Jen’s Deli or Generations Pizzeria before or after!

  • April 1, 9am-5pm
  • Cost $5.00 adults, 12 and under FREE
  • All ages
  • Over 200 tables of new and old toys, collectibles, and action figures! 

2. Home Opener @ The Dayton Dragons– Dayton

***DMB Tip- Dragons tix go fast so if you can’t make this day, check out their website for other available game days.

  • April 7, 7pm
  • Ticket prices vary
  • All ages
  • Don’t miss out on some great American baseball, right here in our hometown!

3. Babywearing Hike– Bellbrook

***DMB Tip- Make sure you have tested your baby pack for comfort on shorter trips (grocery, shopping)  before committing to a hike.

  • April 7, 4pm-5pm
  • $5 for non-residents, free for residents
  • All stages of babywearing welcome and the hike will be on relatively flat trails.

4. The Cat in the Hat @ Victoria Theater– Dayton

***DMB Tip- There will be a “Sensory- Friendly” showing on April 9th for children with sensory processing special needs!

  • April 8, 1pm and 4pm
  • $15
  • All ages
  • The magical story comes to life on stage in this 60 minute classic. 

5. Full Moon Night Hike at Russ Nature Center– Beavercreek

***DMB Tip- Don’t forget the hats and gloves – nice spring days still have cool (or cold!) nights.

  • April 11, 8:30pm-10pm
  • Free
  • Ages 11 and up
  • During April’s “Egg Moon”, venture out at night to see and hear our native nocturnal animals.

6. Donut Haus Tour– Springboro

***DMB Tip – Get a small group of friends with kids and don’t forget your cameras!

  • Call ahead (937) 748-0380 
  • $9 children, adult chaperones free
  • Preschool age+
  • Kids will get to take part in making donuts, filling them and then will decorate their own at the end.

7. Train Rides at Carillon Park– Dayton

***DMB Tip- Have a train-crazy kid? Carillon Park also hosts a 2- day Rail Festival in June.

  • April 15, 1pm-4pm
  • $1
  • All ages
  • Adults and kids alike can enjoy a ride on the 1/8th scale real railroad. Ride passes are available if a non-stop riding day is just your thing.

8. Captain America: Civil War @ the Air Force Museum Theatre-Dayton

***DMB Tip- Make a day of it and visit the museum and its newly opened fourth building. Also, this is a once per month event, so check the website for movies showing through December.

  • April 23, 4pm
  • $5
  • Age appropriate based upon movie shown
  • The films are shown on the six-story screen in the Air Force Museum Theatre, located inside the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force! 

9. Hawthorn Hill Tour– Oakwood

***DMB Tip- Consider checking your local library for some children’s books about the Wright Brothers and make this an extra special trip by learning about Dayton history as a family.

  • Wednesdays & Saturdays, 10am, 12:30pm
  • $12, and for just $3 more, get admission to Carillon Park too
  • All ages
  • Enjoy a tour of the home of Orville Wright. Talk about Dayton history!

10. Volunteer Work Day at Antioch College Farm– Yellow Springs

***DMB Tip-  No matter what you choose to help with, a simple pair of gardening gloves will go a long way toward protecting your hands.

  • April 18, 6pm-8pm (or sunset)
  • Free
  • All ages and skill levels welcome
  • Join Antioch students and community members to help and learn about various topics including gardening, sustainability and composting on the Farm.

11. Wildflower Walk with Author Bob Henn– Cedarville

***DMB Tip- Mr. Henn will have copies of his book Wildflowers of Ohio for sale as well.

  • April 22, 10am-12pm
  • Free
  • All ages
  • Hike at Massie Creek Gorge and learn about identifying flowers, as well as their uses.

12. Pioneer Village Civil War Training Camp– Waynesville

***DMB Tip- Do your kids love to play dress up? Do a little googling for period costumes and then hit the thrift stores!

  • April 29, 30 10am-5pm
  • $5 (proceeds go to maintaining the Village and its buildings) 
  • All ages (this will be on grass so strollers won’t be useful)
  • Witness what life was like for Union soldiers during the Civil War in a training camp, getting ready for battle.

Hey Ya'll! I’m Audrey, a middle of nowhere, East Tennessee transplant. My husband (and forever crush) Andy and I were born and raised in Ohio State Buckeye territory, where we met in junior high school and married halfway through college. We have 2 tweens here on Earth: Lucas-the sweetest jokester boy you will ever meet, and Alaina-a charismatic and responsible redhead. We were hoping for a bigger family, but it wasn’t in the cards for us. For years we vacationed here in and around Knoxville, and so when the opportunity came to move here, we took it! Prior to moving here, I was first and foremost a Wife and Mother, but filled my days at a special needs preschool, title company, and as a FT volunteer-a-holic. In my spare time, I love diy, crafting, reading and writing. And I will always be a barefoot farm girl at heart. We raise/grow our own food- and I occasionally even make dinner out of our homegrown goodness- but I hate cooking! I can’t wait to immerse myself in this sweet, southern community!
