He’s OK, I Promise.

This may come as a shock to some of you, but my kids don’t always appreciate being told, “no.” In fact, “no” is a word that has even been known to bring them to tears. Something about mom putting her foot down shatters their freedom and ruins the fun.

Have you ever witnessed a complete toddler meltdown?

toddler meltdowns

Who am I kidding? If you’re a mom reading this right now, then of course you have! To the untrained eye (and ears), those cries may seem horrendous. What mother would dare to let her sweet, precious, innocent babe cry so much without tending to him? Surely she must be a monster!

Hold up, Betty! Pump your brakes right there. Did you see what actually occurred moments before the meltdown began? Did you know that before sweet little Billy threw himself to the ground in protest, he was not listening to his mom whom you have deemed to be inferior because she isn’t comforting him right now? He was about to hurt himself when she told him “no,” but you didn’t see that part, did you? He’s OK, I promise.

Motherhood is complicated, at best. We’re all just trying to navigate this life, do our best for our kids, and keep our little worlds turning. It’s even harder when moments like these occur in public for prying eyes to see. Next time you see a mom struggling, try to give her a comforting smile, or a “Hey, you’re doing great!” instead of passing judgment and assuming the worst. I’ll do the same. We’re all in this thing called “motherhood” together, after all.
