Goodnight Messy Room {A Goodnight Moon Parody}

1

In my living room,
There was a mountain of toys.
And a sense of impending doom,
And piles upon piles of –

Plastic dinosaurs in a massive uproar

And one hundred spiky little Barbie shoes,
And a wooden train set that bellows “Choo Choo!”
And an impressive menu of pretend cuisine,
And a play housekeeping set – though nothing is actually clean.

And enough stuffed animals to fill a zoo,
And scattered dress-up clothes: wings, tiaras, even a tutu.
And stacks of books that are on borrow from the library,
And sprinklings of teeny, tiny glittery fairies.

And, of course, always a stray sock,
And a fallen tower made of colorful blocks.
And the leftover crumbs of a long-forgotten snack,
And an overflowing mermaid printed backpack.

Goodnight dinosaurs,
Goodnight uproar.
Goodnight little shoes,
Goodnight wooden choo-choo,
Goodnight gourmet cuisine.

Goodnight to my home that will never again be truly clean.

Goodnight wild zoo,
Goodnight frilly tutu.
Goodnight makeshift library,
Goodnight teeny fairies.

Goodnight random sock,
Goodnight rainbow blocks.
Goodnight stale snack,
Goodnight miniature backpack.

Goodnight piles and piles,
Goodnight mountain of toys.

Goodnight to my sweet little mess-making girl and boy.

  1. This is so cute, so creative, and so true! I had a professor in college that said a sign of good writing is when you read it and think, “I wish I had thought of writing that.”
Well, I wish I had thought of writing that!
