I have a nagging urge/calling to do more. I have been blessed my whole life. I have the best parents, siblings, extended family and friends. I had a wonderful education, I married the man of my dreams, and I have three amazing daughters. I wonder why I have it made when so many others suffer.
Currently, my husband and I are going through the process of becoming certified foster parents. We’re still not 100% sure this is right for us, and so we made a list of the pros and cons for our family.
Pros:
- We want a big family! The more, the merrier! I mean, who wouldn’t want to see more of these sweet little faces?
- We’re so excited to make a big difference in the lives of traumatized youth. Even a small amount of time with these kids can mean so much!
- I have a degree in early childhood Ed, but I’m a stay-at-home mom. I want to use my knowledge and resources at home with more kiddos!
- We’re moving to a bigger home with room to spare.
Cons:
- I’m super worried about attaching to a kiddo only to have to give him/her away. How do I deal with that? How do my kids deal with that?
- There’s a time commitment to maintaining foster parent certification involving taking 40 hours of classes every two years.
- The rules seem daunting – one must get permission to do practically anything with a foster child such as traveling over 100 miles from home (my folks live about 150 miles away).
So, now we need to make the big decision. Once we know for sure we want to jump in, we need to decide who would be right for our home. What ages are we willing to take? Would we be able/willing to care for a child with disabilities?
