Becoming an Antique {Thoughts from a First-Time Grandma}

It happened when I least expected it.

An early morning call that caught me off guard. She called and said that she wanted to show me something that she had been working on. I was in the midst of school drop-off and said that I would call her back later.

I got sidetracked and forgot to call back. She is really handy and has been doing home improvements, so I figured I would call back when I could check out the new project at my leisure.

So the call came in – a FaceTime call that changed my life.

It was our typical call, “Hey there, so sorry, I forgot to call you back.” And then she said, “Well, I want to show you what I have been working on.”

To my surprise, she shows me a picture of a onesie that declares that there is something in the oven, along with a few positive pregnancy tests.

My eyes welled up with tears as I, in that very moment, realized that I was going to be a “Tiki.” My version of Grandma. I was becoming an antique.

At that very moment, everything was different. My son was going to become a father. My family tree would grow by a new branch and for a brief moment, I felt old.

That lasted only a moment.

I’m not sure if I had blinders on before that special FaceTime call, but I now saw the future clearly.

Antiques are treasured, antiques are weathered, antiques are unique, antiques have value.  My gray hairs seem to sparkle now, and I am looking forward to this spring when I get to meet my grandson.

This “Tiki” can’t wait to hold him and share with him all of the things I have learned in this life. So Baby Knox, get ready for this silver, curly-haired, over the hill, past her prime Grandma, because I’ve got stories to tell you about your “Daddy” and how he changed my life, too.

Rumor has it that becoming a grandparent is an amazing adventure. I’ve heard it is even better than the title Mom. So if you are a Gigi, a Mimi, an Oma, a Gma, a Memaw – whatever they call you – this sure is a great place to be.

Hey local mommas! I grew up in Centerville, but I now live in Wilmington with my husband Tony. Together we have 6 kids, Joe, and his wife Allison, Austin, and his wife Hannah, Sydney and her husband Hayden, Andrew and his wife Lauren and our littles, Max and Eli. Did I mention we are a little nuts starting over with this parenting thing when we are 45+? We are officially adding new titles to our names in 2022- Tiki and Jeep (our version of Grandma and Grandpa). My husband and I are both ministers, and we get to work together in a local church. We were both married before and brought our families together in 2010. After a few years of marriage we felt God's leading for us to adopt. We added Max to our family in 2014 and Eli joined us in 2017, our quiver is officially full! Blending our family has been an adventure! Add some ex-spouses and two birth mommas and we have ourselves a crazy crew! Coffee is my love language. The beach is my happy place and I long to have my toes in the sand. I love being part of the team at Dayton Mom Collective.
