I’m an Oily Mama, not a Witch Doctor

2

When I mention I use essential oils to people, I usually get one of two looks. One of excitement because they too “know the ways” of the oily life or the eye-roll of a person that’s gotten one too many, “Hey Girl, I saw you like blah blah blah. Can I share *insert MLM name here* info with you?” messages in their social media inbox.

I’m also not one of those people you’ll see trying every natural remedy known to mankind before seeking medical attention. I vaccinate my kids, take them to a normal pediatrician, and serve up a fair amount of McDonald’s on busy days. I am by no means ultra “crunchy” but I do have a love for natural products and what using them has done to benefit my family’s lives.

I’m not here to try and convince you my way of life is any better than anyone else’s.
I’m here to say to stop the judgment and be more open to the choices around you.
I’ve used essential oils for varying purposes for around four years now. In that time, I’ve personally been able to cut down on chemical use in my household, purchase way fewer OTC medications, and happen to think my favorite diffuser blend makes my house smell heavenly. However, I will say research is key when it comes to using essential oils and that all oils are not created equal.

Safely using essential oils is so important to me and something I preach when sharing my views on them with my friends and family. I’m not out here peddling potions and get-better-quick tonics, I’m sharing a more natural way of dealing with day to day things in the realms of health, beauty, and home products. I also know essential oils are a huge trend right now, but unlike some trends, essential oil use can be traced back thousands of years and are still used in many modern day items. Using essential oils is definitely a lifestyle choice, but I don’t think it’s fair to point fingers because it’s not the mainstream choice currently.

Everyone is entitled to live their life according to how they see fit. However, people also need to realize they are responsible for their lifestyle choices as well.

Not using products correctly is a large part of why people like me get questioned the way we do because a few people weren’t responsible oil users.

There are also companies out there that are hopping on the essential oil bandwagon and trying to make a buck instead of being responsible sources. (For example, please don’t pick up an oil from the popular local dollar spot…just sayin’.) This is why knowing your oils, their source and uses are so very important and a message I’ll never stop shouting from the rooftops.

With this said, I hope those of you out there that just don’t get the appeal of oils will at least respect your oily friends. Yeah, some of them can be annoying and overly excited about oil use but maybe it’s because it’s actually made a huge difference in their life. Maybe there’s a mama out there that is finally getting a stress free moment because diffusing lavender helps their kiddos sleep peacefully for the first time since birth. Maybe a friend that’s struggled with skin issues is finally seeing results because of a new essential oil based product. You never know everyone’s personal stories, but they are there and they have meaning.

So think twice before thinking your girlfriend suddenly seems to think she’s a modern day witch doctor, maybe she’s just a happy oily mama like myself.

  1. Love this article! I’m new to oils and I’ve taken a class-trying to learn more and try new ways of using them. What brand do you like to use? Especially for kids?

    • Hello Sarah,

Thank you for reading! I personally use Young Living Essential oils, however there are a few reputable brands out there that are great as well. My biggest suggestion is to read up on each company and go with what you feel meets your standards. Feel free to find me out in the world of social media too if you’d like to chat more, I’m pretty sure I’m one of the few Samara’s in the area haha!
