January Dayton Dozen: Guide to Family-Friendly Events

Still riding that happy holiday high? Feeling burnt out but looking for some fun? No worries because we’ve got a whole list of family-friendly fun for January.
So grab those coats and gloves and bundle up because there is still tons of fun to be had here in the Dayton Area!



1. Ice Skating @ Riverscape in Downtown Dayton

***DMB Tip*** Bundle up because this event is outdoors!

  • Open Daily All Through January
  • Times vary, please check website.
  • Admission is $5 per person and skate rentals are $2 per person. Children 3 and under are free with a paying adult. 

The rink has a little something for everyone: beginners’ lessons, open skating, broomball and curling, hot chocolate, snacks, and music.

2. First Day Hike @ Caesar Creek Nature Center

***DMB Tip*** Bundle up and wear proper footwear for this one folks!

  • January 1st; 1pm
  • Free Event

Start the New Year off on the right foot. Join us at the Nature Center for a one-mile, easy guided hike around the scenic Old Woods Trail. Stick around you’d like to try a second (3 mile) guided hike to the Swinging Bridge and Waterfall.

3. 150th Birthday Celebration @ Young’s Dairy

***DMB Tip*** Plan your visit according as it’s sure to be busy. Allow yourself extra time when it comes to parking and lines.

  • January 18th and 19th; 7am-10pm
  • January 20th and 21st; 7am-9pm

This local farm was founded in 1869 – the year the red barn was built – 150 years ago! Drive out to Yellow Springs to help celebrate this milestone birthday! Enjoy special sales on food and fun all over the farm.

4. Family Day: Robots Among Us @ National Museum of the U.S. Airforce

***DMB Tip*** This is going to be a busy, hands-on event so consider leaving the little ones at home. 

  • January 19th; 9am-3pm
  • Free Admission

Learn about the exciting field of robotics through fun demonstrations and hands-on activities!

5. Kids in the Kitchen with Kates Plate

***DMB Tip*** Spots are limited, so get your tickets asap! Purchase tickets here.

  • January 14th @ 5:30pm
  • Cook With Me Series for ages 4-8.
  • 2 hours of hands-on fun with your mini-chef!
  • Requires a participating adult to accompany the child.
  • 1 Ticket includes a seat for child AND their adult.
  • Please wear tennis shoes and pull long hair back. Aprons will be provided.

Learn, prepare, cook, and then eat a meal together! They will incorporate a variety of healthy foods and cooking techniques. Menu for January 14th, 2019: Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Cucumber Salad, Funky Fried Rice, Matcha Energy Bites

6. Finding Neverland @ The Schuster Center

***DMB Tip*** This would make a special night out with your older kiddos. Going to a show is a great way to introduce your children to the arts and Dayton has a rich theatre community to do that in.

FINDING NEVERLAND tells the incredible story behind one of the world’s most beloved characters: Peter Pan. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys’ enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever.

7. Junie B Jones is not a Crook @ Towne Hall Theatre in Centerville

***DMB Tip*** Buy your tickets in advance here.

  • January 18 – February 3
  • Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 3 pm
  • A special matinee performance Saturday, January 26th at 11 am

Something terrible happened to Junie B. Jones at school today! Someone stole her new furry mittens! So when Junie B. finds a wonderful pen of many colors, she should be allowed to keep it, right? Because finders keepers, losers weepers. Junie B. Jones is not a crook . . . or is she?

8. Winter Folk Festival @ Yellow Cab Tavern

***DMB Tip*** Be sure to bring cash to pay for admittance at the door if you didn’t purchase pre-sale tickets in December.

  • January 19th at 7pm

Check out the SIXTH annual WinterFolk Fest at the ‘Old’ Yellow Cab Building. A night of ‘Music, Art, Food, & Fun for ALL ages.’ This year they will once again have nonstop music all night and three of the area’s fantastic visual artists on hand displaying and selling their artwork. Harvest Mobile Cuisine, with its farm-fresh comfort food, will be on hand to fill your belly and craft beer & cocktails are available to those 21 & up with proper ID.

9. January Winter Restaurant Week 

***DMB Tip*** This event is so fun and can family friendly or even part of Date Night! Just be sure to make reservations in advance, popular eateries fill up fast during this special week.

  • January 20th – 27th

The Miami Valley Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Week is a chance for dozens of local restaurants to show off new dishes and offer you a chance to see what they can do. Now with over 40 of the biggest-name local restaurants participating, you’ve got an excuse to try a lot of places around town you may never have sampled before. Every restaurant approaches the week differently, but overall, you’ll be able to pick up a three-course meal for $20.19, $25.19, or $30.19 at many of the spots in town. 10. The Princess Ball at The Estate

***DMB Tip*** Get your tickets now before they sell out!

  • January 26th; 2-4pm
  • Regular Tickets: $35
  • VIP Tickets: $70

The Princess Ball at The Estate is the perfect Christmas gift for the special daughter or granddaughter in your life! Give her the gift of magic and show her that dreams really do come true! Head out to the Estate at Sunset Farm for a truly magical princess themed afternoon full of dancing, singing, crafts, glitter tattoos, royal snacks and photos with five of your favorite princesses! Special guests also include a prince charming and a loveable character worth melting for! Each ticket admits one child and one adult. Feel free to dress up as your favorite princess to attend The Princess Ball!

11. Do Your Moo @ Young’s Dairy

***DMB Tip*** Jazz up your “moo” with a homemade cow costume and make it as simple or extravagant as you want, your littles are sure to love the process!

  • January 28th – February 3rd
  • Start practicing your MOOs now! Young’s Dairy wants to hear your best MOO! A good MOO will be rewarded with Young’s Famous Homemade Ice Cream.

Give a great MOO at the Dairy Store, and you’ll earn a one dip upgrade for your dessert. For example, buy a one dip cone, MOO for the staff, and they’ll upgrade it to a two dip cone for FREE. Add a dip to your sundae, or upgrade your milkshake. It’s up to you and your MOO! They won’t accept just any MOO. The staff will be the judge. They’re not looking for loudness, but will be listening for creativity, tonal ability, and heartfelt MOOs.

12. Little Red Hen – Animal Tracks @ Learning Tree Farm

***DMB Tip*** Grab those coast and winter boots, this outside event is sure to be chilly but so much fun!

  • January 29th 9:30 – 11am
  • Tickets $10
  • Registration is required

Hike together to stay warm and to look for wild animal friends’ tracks in the snow. What are they doing when it is cold outside? Create an observation tool and have a warm snack together to round out the morning.
