Hannah’s Treasure Chest: Enriching the Lives of Children in Need

0

Imagine, for a moment, being a young woman suddenly faced with the challenge of caring for your teen sister, brother with unique needs, and own preschooler. Or, imagine you or your partner are laid off, the holidays are approaching, and you must choose between the magic of Christmas for your children or paying the rent. Imagine you are hungry, have no diapers for your newborn, and are struggling to keep it all together. What would you do? Where would you turn?

Hannah’s Treasure Chest, located in Centerville, OH, has been responding to unmet needs such as these in the Miami Valley since 2001. Through collaborating with local social service agencies in Montgomery, Butler, Greene, and Warren County, the organization provides vital resources to families in crisis. Families gain access to clothing, baby equipment, books, shoes, diapers, hygiene items, and other essentials. In 2017 alone, they reached 5,500 children and partnered with over 50 Miami Valley agencies.  Their impact is far-reaching.

Perhaps a family has agreed to lovingly foster children who were forced to leave their home with only the clothes on their back. Hannah’s Treasure Chest is able to step in and provide essentials for this family in transition. In addition, their Brighter Smiles Dental Kits assure that all children receive dental care packages to promote proper oral hygiene.  Additionally, their Blankets and Bears program lovingly provides blankets, stuffed toys, and a Cuddle Bear book for babies under 12 months.

For a family in crisis, the holiday season may be stressful.  The Giving Angels program assists families at or below poverty level by providing holiday gifts for newborns through children 12-years-old.  Each child enrolled receives two wish-list items and two needed items.  Last year, 651 children were served through the Giving Angels.
